Meryl Streep Wins Oscar For Best Actress

Meryl Streep, OSCARS
Way to mix things up, Academy! Toward the end of what was mostly an otherwise predictable Oscar ceremony, Meryl Streep laid claim to one of the night’s only upsets when she took home the statue for Best Actress for her role as Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady.”
Though calling a win by such an incredible actress and classy lady an “upset” feels a bit off; it was, however, a category that many expected Viola Davis to win for her role in “The Help.”
This was Streep’s 17th nomination - the most nominations of any actor - and third win; the other two were for “Kramer vs. Kramer” and “Sophie’s Choice.”
The 62-year-old actress was also awarded a standing ovation, and noted, “I really understand that I’ll never be up here again.”
